Happy birthday, Charlie!

February 12, 2012

Let’s take a break from our regularly scheduled programming to wish Charles Darwin a happy 203rd birthday. Born on February 12, 1809, Darwin fundamentally changed the way we think about science, moving from what questions (What is this plant?) to hows and whys (How did these finches come to occupy every available niche on the island?).

Take some time today to appreciate how “descent with common ancestry” and “natural selection” concept flavor your perception of the natural world. If you’re in Florida, savor how palm fronds are similar – but different – and how even more different – but similar – are the oak leaves and Spanish moss.

P.S. Check out these free evolution-related book downloads at the National Academy of Sciences, courtesy of an evolution blog I just found, Why Evolution Is True.
